China's sodium-ion battery is growing rapidly, with a total investment of nearly 40 billion during the year!

Recently, Yu Zhenhua, vice chairman and secretary-general of the Energy Storage Special Committee of the China Energy Research Association, said that sodium-ion batteries have shown a strong momentum of development this year.According to incomplete statistics, there will be more than 20 sodium battery projects signed, filed, and started in 2024, involving battery cells, positive and negative electrode materials and many other subdivided fields, with a total project investment of nearly 40 billion yuan.

In his opinion, this year's first 10MWh sodium-ion battery energy storage power station has been officially put into operation in Nanning, Guangxi, and Xinjiang Barikol energy storage project that combines semi-solid-state batteries, sodium-ion batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries, and liquid flow batteries has been connected to the grid.In the future, with the development of the energy storage industry, sodium electricity is expected to have more landing applications in the field of energy storage.

“Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors have high power density, long life and considerable energy density. They can replace lead-acid batteries in the future and fill the performance space of supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries."Li Jinghong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor of Tsinghua University, believes that the development of low-cost and high-safety sodium-ion hybrid capacitors has more potential for development in the field of large-scale energy storage. At the same time, sodium-ion hybrid capacitors are still facing industrialization challenges. In market applications, it is still necessary to overcome the lack of industry specifications and national standards for products, large-scale mass production and large-scale application have not yet been achieved, and the upstream materials are immature. It is necessary to re-match electronic components suitable for the characteristics of sodium-ion hybrid capacitors, and there is a lack of mature downstream application demonstration solutions and other phased problems.
