BYD will build safe and explosion-proof sodium-ion battery for two-wheelers this year

In February, a fire caused by an electric two-wheeler in a residential area in Nanjing China. attracted widespread attention. At that time, Fudi Battery, a subsidiary of BYD, issued a document stating that based on the "2.23" fire accident in Nanjing, the battery management team and development team "held an emergency meeting overnight" to discuss quality and safety solutions for two-wheeled vehicles and decided to transfer the research and development results of passenger vehicles to Apply it to the field of two-wheeled vehicles, increase investment in the research and development of two-wheeled vehicles, and develop safe batteries that can go upstairs.

Currently on the market, electric two-wheelers usually use lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, and graphene batteries. In particular, once lithium batteries catch fire, they burn quickly and are extremely powerful. In comparison, sodium-ion batteries have higher internal resistance, generate less instantaneous heat and lower temperature rise under short circuit conditions. In the field of electric two-wheelers, sodium-ion batteries have become the new development direction of the industry. Before Fudi Battery, in March 2023, Yadi and Huayu New Energy cooperated to release the first sodium-ion battery product "Ji Na No. 1". At the same time, the two parties also released the first supporting vehicle of this sodium-ion battery, Yadi Ji Na S9 . In 2023, brands including Yadi, Tailing, and Xinri have successively released sodium battery electric two-wheelers.

Zhang Jian said that due to the uncertain costs caused by price fluctuations of lithium battery materials, lead-acid battery pollution and other issues, BYD chose sodium-ion batteries as the development direction of two-wheeled vehicles. In terms of manufacturing costs, BYD's sodium-ion battery chose a large cylindrical structure. The basic structural parts are all aluminum. With the full-lug structure, the battery power performance is good. At the same time, the production cycle of large cylindrical batteries is high, which can optimize manufacturing costs.

On November 18, 2023, Fudi Battery signed a contract with the sodium battery project jointly invested by Huaihai Holdings and landed in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province. It plans to invest a total investment of 10 billion yuan and an annual production capacity of 30GWh. It plans to build the world's largest mini-car sodium battery system supporting system, mainly producing Sodium-ion battery cells and PACK and other related supporting products.

In January 2024, BYD (Xuzhou) sodium-ion battery project officially started construction in Xuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone. The project has a total investment of 10 billion yuan. It mainly produces sodium-ion battery cells and PACK and other related supporting products, with a planned annual production capacity of 30GWh. At present, Fudi Battery's 150Ah blade sodium battery cell has passed pilot testing and can be produced on a large scale. The 20MWh sodium electric Rubik's Cube energy storage system is being trialled in the company's Nanning Industrial Park.

Zhang Jian introduced that BYD's sodium battery products have passed tests such as short circuit, overcharge, impact, and needle puncture. The storage in some high-temperature scenarios is also relatively good, and the rate performance at room temperature and low temperature is good. In the future, the company will also Further tune the battery’s cycle performance.
